Prompting Is Only Half the Story: Why Claude Skills Beat Better Prompts

Count how many times this week you typed some version of “my clients are small business owners who…” into Claude.

Each of those is a prompt doing a job that should only be done once. The six prompts in our last article work well, and every one of them asks you to explain your business again, from the top.

The other half is teaching Claude once, so the explaining is already done.

What a skill is

A Claude skill is a saved set of instructions, plus any examples, templates or reference files that go with them, that Claude pulls in on its own when a task calls for it. Anthropic describes skills as packages of instructions and resources that Claude uses automatically when relevant.

In practice, you ask for this week’s newsletter, and the newsletter skill arrives with your audience, your voice, your structure and your banned words already loaded. You wrote them down once. They apply every time the task comes up.

Why skills beat prompts

You stop re-explaining. The context you keep pasting (who you serve, how you sound, what you sell, what you never say) lives in one place. A five-paragraph prompt becomes “draft this week’s newsletter.”

The output stops depending on your mood. A prompt is only as good as what you remembered to include that day. Tired on a Friday, you leave out the audience and get generic copy. A skill doesn’t forget the audience on Fridays.

It works for more than one person. When an assistant or a partner runs the same task, they get the same standard you do. Your way of doing it no longer lives only in your head.

Every fix sticks. Correct Claude inside a single chat and the lesson stays in that chat. Correct the skill, and every future run gets the fix.

If you already use ChatGPT or Claude every day

Daily use is a good start, and it’s also where a lot of owners stop. Out of the box, neither tool knows your clients, your offers or your standards, so each conversation gets you a capable stranger. Skills are how the assistant you use personally becomes one that works the way your business does.

What goes inside a good skill

A skill is only as good as the process written into it. One that says “write in a friendly, professional tone” saves you typing a single sentence. One that names the reader, what they worry about, how a good draft opens, the three phrases you never use, and what to check before it ships hands Claude your judgment.

A skill without a process only works halfway. Most of the value comes from the thinking you do to fill it in: what good looks like in your business, written specifically enough that someone else could follow it. Think of the gap between telling a temp what to do each morning and handing a new hire the binder you wish you’d had on day one.

When a prompt is still the right call

Prompting stays useful. One-off questions, a first draft of something you’ve never done, exploring an idea: a good prompt is still the fastest way there.

The signal to switch is repetition. Once you’ve typed the same context into Claude three times, write it down as a process and turn it into a skill.

Where to start

Pick the one task you’ve prompted most this month and answer three questions about it. What does a great result look like? What do you always end up correcting? What should Claude never do? Those answers are the first draft of your first skill, and Claude can help you shape them into one.

Claude also ships with ready-made skills you can switch on today. Here are six worth starting with, and how to make them your own.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Claude skill? A saved set of instructions and files (templates, examples, reference material) that Claude loads automatically when a task matches it, so you don’t re-explain the same context in every chat.

Do skills replace prompts? No. You still prompt for one-off and exploratory work. Skills take over the tasks you repeat.

Can I build a skill without coding? Yes. Claude’s skill creator interviews you about the task in plain language and writes the skill file for you.
